Sue Mitchell, MD
Dr. Mitchell is a board-certified gastroenterologist with over 30 years of clinical experience and the founder of Gutwell Medical. After years of caring for patients, who struggled with unresolved digestive and chronic health issues, she established Gutwell Medical to focus on identifying and addressing root causes, not just manage symptoms.
As a functional gastroenterologist, Dr. Mitchell blends traditional medical training with evidenced -based functional medicine to create highly personalized, whole-body treatment plans. With formal training in Internal Medicine and Functional Medicine, she is known for taking the time to truly listen to each patient’s complete story and for developing thoughtful, individualized care strategies.
Dr. Mitchell is especially passionate about optimizing the gut microbiome and believes that a patient’s clinical history is as important as advanced laboratory and functional testing for accurate diagnoses and effective gut healing. She has a strong background in clinical nutrition and considers nutrition a cornerstone of both gastrointestinal and overall health.
Committed to staying at the forefront of medical science, Dr Mitchell is currently an investigator in a clinical trial at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs that is studying the effects of vitamin D and omega 3 deficiencies. This work helps to ensure her patients benefit from the latest research and this work has solidified her commitment to identifying nutritional deficiencies as a vital part of healing.
In addition to digestive health, Dr. Mitchell has a deep commitment to cardiovascular wellness. Inspired by her personal experience and family history of heart disease, she has completed special training in integrative cardiology and considers heart health a key component to whole body care and longevity
Gutwell Medical is led by Dr Mitchell alongside an exceptional nursing. The team is dedicated to ensuring every patient feels informed, supported and genuinely cared for from their very first encounter.
Personal Note:
Outside of medicine, Dr. Mitchell is a proud mom of three and the devoted companion to two Labrador retrievers - who her children suspect may be the true loves of her life. She has always embraced a wide range of interests, from raising 100% grass-fed beef in Lake George, Colorado to experimenting (with mixed success) in perfecting healthy jerky.
She has run the Pikes Peak Ascent, enjoys staying active, and most recently decided to train for a half marathon alongside her daughter. She’s also currently working with her trainer toward a personal goal of completing a pull-up—proof that new challenges can be embraced at any age.
